[Word Powers] Today's Words

Vivify (viv-uh-fahy) (verb):

 

1.            To give life to; animate; quicken.

2.            to enliven; brighten; sharpen.

 

Stories not only provide context for statistical statements but can illustrate and vivify them as well.          

 

Gastronome (gas-truh-nohm) (noun):

 

1.            A person who enjoys and has a discriminating taste for foods.

2.            A connoisseur of good food and drink.

 

Even though Paris was then considered the culinary capital of Europe, the food at the Cercle was so highly revered that many well-known gastronomes regularly made the trip to Lyon to eat there

 

 

Fillip (FIL-uhp) (noun):  Something which causes a sudden improvement

 

The athletics win provided a much-needed fillip for national pride.

 

Effulgent  (ih-FUHL-juhnt) (adj):Shining forth brilliantly; radiant.

 

The violet sky seemed branded with the effulgent figure of the sun  lowering over the sea on the edge of the horizon.
