[Word Powers] Daily Words - August 2009


Sedulous (sej-uh-luhs) (Adj) :

1. Diligent in application or attention; persevering; assiduous

2. Characterized by or accomplished with care and perseverance.

He did not attain this distinction by accident but by sedulous study from the cradle forward.

Sapid (sap-id) (Adj):

1. Having taste or flavor, especially having a strong pleasant flavor.

2. Agreeable to the mind; to one's liking.

Chemistry can concentrate the sapid and odorous elements of the peach and the bitter almond into a transparent fluid.

Plaintive (PLEYN-tiv) (adj):

Expressing sorrow or melancholy; mournful

We were about to leave when we heard Jim's plaintive voice asking, "What about me?"

Futz (fuhts):

1. (verb) To handle or deal with, esp. idly, reluctantly, or as a time-consuming task (Usually followed by around or with).

2. (noun) A fool; simpleton.

I spent all day futzing with those file folders.

Shear (shir) (verb):

1. To use a cutting tool such as shears.

2. To remove (fleece or hair) by cutting or clipping.

With a fondness for longer hair, the barber didn't like to shear too much.

Sheer (shir) (adj):

1. Thin, fine, and transparent.
The ballerina's tutu was pink and sheer.

Facade (fuh-sahd) (noun): An artificial or deceptive front

Facetious (fass-see-shuss) (Adj): Joking, or trying to be amusing, esp. at inappropriate times.

Solicitous (suh-lis-i-tuhs) (Adj):

The solicitous salesman hovered around anxious that if he left us alone, we would decide to leave.

Solvent (sol-vuhnt) (Adj):

1. able to pay all just debts.

2. having the power of dissolving; causing solution.

Jerry didn’t hope to become a millionaire; all he wanted to do was remain solvent.

Decade (dekeyd) (noun): A period of ten years.
