[Word Powers] Thursday Trivia - July 2009

This section covers few Indian colloquial words which made it into the English Dictionary.

Gymkhana : From the Hindi word 'ghend-khana' , a meet or festival featuring sports contests or athletic skills.

Dungarees: From the Hindi word 'dongari kapar', trousers made of sturdy denim fabric.

Chintz: From the Hindi word 'chint', printed cotton fabric, used esp. for draperies.

Cushy: From the Hindi word 'khush', meaning soft and comfortable.

Jackfruit: From the Malayalam word 'cakkai', a tropical Asian tree having large edible fruits.
