Fathom (fath -uh m) (verb): 

 

1.            To penetrate to the truth of; comprehend; understand

2.            To measure the depth of; sound

 

We simply could not fathom the reasons why the rule was axed.

 

Indemnity (in-dem-ni-tee) (noun):

 

1.            Protection or security against damage or loss.

2.            Compensation for damage or loss sustained.

 

The government paid the family an indemnity for the missing pictures.
